Bob Bauer was born into a close-knit Catholic family. The children included John, Rick, Tom, Bob, Jimmy, and Anne. The family moved to Wyandotte in about 1958. They joined St. Patrick's Parish where Bob served as an altar boy. His older brothers graduated from St. Pat's High School and the three younger siblings went to Gabriel Richard High School in Riverview.

As youngsters they staged backyard, boxing matches and dubbed Bob "Brute Bernard" after the Saturday morning, television-wrestling star. After they grew up the 3 boys loved heading out to the "Lost Nations" preserve near Hillsdale to bow hunt. Bob also loved camping and riding his motorcycle.

Anne remembers that Bob also had a dog named, "Buddy," given to him by Chuck McIntosh. She recalls Bob as, "kindhearted and [he] was fun to be around. He loved singing in the choir – The Age of Aquarius was the song I remember from one of his concerts. Bob also played the king in The King and I. His long hair was such a spoof for the Yul Brenner character. One time he cut off the cast on a broken ankle a week early and took off for a trip to Colorado on a bicycle." Bob also liked to hang out at ‘The Quarry, " a local swimming hole when there still were such things.

A classmate recalls, "Bob was an offensive center for the football team. His first car was a 3-speed manual shift station wagon. He replaced the clutch himself. He liked the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I remember him telling us about Bilbo Baggins the Hobbit. Bob's dad made a dark homemade beer. I don't remember having any but I'm sure he and maybe Chuck McIntosh tried a taste. I will always remember him as a best friend."

After high school Bob went to work for Chrysler's Trenton engine plant. He was unmarried at the time of the auto accident that took his life.
