Bruce died in a plane crash near Mina, S.D.

He was the son of Kenneth and Esther Borland. He married Kate Blessman on Sept. 10, 1983. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Daniel, Thomas and Benjamin; one daughter, Elizabeth Borland; his parents; four sisters, Linda (and David) Captain, Connie (and Robert) Friedrich, Joyce (and Gerald) Easley and Becky (and Douglas) Klaus; one brother, Mark (and Deb); and 22 nieces and nephews.

One sister preceded him in death.

He began a golf course design career by working for several firms in the Chicago area and started his own Chicago-based design firm in 1989. He joined Nicklaus Design of North Palm Beach in 1990. He was the design associate on 10 Jack Nicklaus "Signature" golf courses, including the nationally acclaimed Colleton River Plantation in Hilton Head, S.C. He was the solo designer on two projects since 1990 and was a design associate on seven projects currently under construction or under design.

Golf Course Designer: Borland was a senior golf course designer for Golden Bear International, owned by golfer Jack Nicklaus. From 1992 until his death, he designed or helped design 25 golf courses worldwide.

He died in the plane crash that also claimed the life of golf Hall of Famer Payne Stewart, the golfer's agents - Robert Fraley and Van Ardan - and the pilots, Michael Kling and Stephanie Bellegarrigue.

According to published reports, Borland had never met Stewart before the flight and was invited aboard at the last minute because he was unable to catch a commercial flight.

Borland was to meet with Stewart to discuss designing a new golf course.
