Fred was born to John and Eva (Schock) Hertel in McIntosh Co., N.D. He grew up and attended country school there, and came to Corson Co. with his parents in 1917.

On 15 Jan 1925, he married Anna Helen Louise Zimmermann, only daughter of Jacob K. and Lydia (Fuerst) Zimmerman, at the United Congregational Church in McLaughlin, Rev. J.M. Pourch officiating. To this union were born nine children, seven boys and two girls. Anna died while delivering Lester on 26 Nov 1935, and Lester died two months later.

On 6 Nov 1936, Fred married the widowed Hildegard Natalina (Billigmeier) Dobler, oldest daughter of August Ludwig and Adelia (Zinck) Billigmeier, at the Congregational parsonage in Kulm, N.D. Hildegard had five children of her own from her previous marriage, three boys and two girls. To this union were born five more children, all boys.

Fred farmed in the McLaughlin area all of his adult life.

He is survived by his wife, Hildegard; eleven sons: Leonard Jacob, Lead, SD, Alfred John, Central City, SD, Raymond Frederick, Deadwood, SD, Martin Norman, Union City, Cal., Lawrence Benjamin, McLaughlin, William H., Gillette, Wyo., Harvey Sylvester, Parker, SD, Rodney A., Watertown, SD, Delray L., Conde, SD., Stanley W. and Timothy Neal, both of Ft. Yates, N.D.; three step sons: Lloyd Earl and Leroy Albin, both of McLaughlin, and LeMore A., Sturgis, SD; two daughters: Hertha Helen Scott, McLaughlin and DeLainis D. Jochim, Selfridge, N.D. and two step daughters: Jeanette V. Jundt, Waukesha, Wis. and Shirley Jerry, St. Paul, Minn.; and 66 grandchildren and 62 great grandchildren; three brothers: Christian E. and Emil, both of Sturgis, SD, and Henry John, Mason City, Iowa; and one sister, Lydia Speidel of McLaughlin.

Preceding him in death are his parents; first wife, Anna; son, Lester; one brother, August Edward; three sisters: Eva Hoff, Rosina Gross and Amelia, who died in infancy.

Rev. John Orwig will be officiating at his funeral at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLaughlin, and burial will at the Redeemer Lutheran Church Cemetery.
