- October 24, 1889, Monroe.--Died, at her residence in Orient, on Thursday, October 17, 1889, of typhoid fever, Mary Lucinda Monroe, aged 18 years and 7 months.

The death of Mrs. Monroe brings not only profound grief to the bereaved husband and immediate relatives, but casts sorrow over the whole community. On December 26, 1887, Mrs. Monroe, nee Cheak, was married to Mr. Oscar Monroe, a young Orient merchant and son of our present county treasurer. A boy babe, now aged eleven months, blessed the union. The lady was a quiet retiring, housewifely disposition that ripened upon acquaintance into enduring friendship and respect. Her untimely taking off is deeply deplored and the heartfelt sympathy of all our people goes out to the stricken husband and motherless child. --Ree Valley Eagle

NOTE- I have searched with no success to find Oscar George Monroe and his later wife Delilah Townsend Monroe; they died in Edgely, LaMoure, ND, he in 1932 and she in 1954, according to several unsourced Ancestry trees. He apparently had a second wife, Kathryn Weber, who gave birth to his children, Sylvia born in 1892 and Helen born in 1894. Helen's social security application names her. He married Delilah in 1898.
