Charles E. McLean was the oldest known child of Peter Charles McLean and Margaret Swasey. Like his father and brothers, he was a painter by trade and well establishing in Brooklyn. His grave is located in a plot that was payed for by the Freemason's lodge he was apparently a member of.
Charles married Sarah A Burger in 1864. Their only child William "Willie" B. was born 18 Dec 1866 and died 5 Aug 1867. Sarah died less than 2 weeks later on 18 Aug 1867.

Charles and Isabella had five children (according to Isabella's 1900 census); three are known at this time: George F. McLean (1871-?), Harriett Augusta McLean (1871-1945)and Cordelia Bruce McLean (1882-1969).
