Elijah married first Elizabeth "Betsy" Walling, and they had nine children: James A Chisum, born 14 Jan 1804, and didn't live long; John Monroe Chisum was born 12 Apr 1807 in White County, Tennessee; Mary C "Polly" Chisum was born 09 Dec 1808 in White County, Tennessee; William P Chisum was born 10 Dec 1810 in White County, Tennessee; Isham Russell Chisum as born 18 Dec 1812 in White County, Tennessee; Elijah Kaufman Chisum was born 21 Feb 1815 in White County, Tennessee; Gillington Chisum was born 20 Dec 1816 in White County, Tennessee; Claiborne Chisum was born Apr 1820 in Covington County, Kentucky; James Madison Chisum was born 14 Jan 1823 in Covington County, Kentucky. Elijah's wife Betsy also died that year. I don't know whether it was childbirth related or not, but she was 50 years old when she died.

By 1830 Elijah had moved to Madison County, Tennessee, and it was there that he married Salina Briley Nesbitt, a widow with a daughter Margaret Ann "Peggy" Nesbitt, who was born in 1823 in Alabama. Elijah and Salina had three children: Thomas Jefferson Chisum, Rebecca Jane Chisum, and Andrew Jackson Chisum.

By 1837 Elijah had moved to Nacogdoches County, Texas, following his sons John Monroe, William, Isham, and Elijah K. In 1842 Elijah was converted to following Jesus Christ at the first Simpson's Campground meeting. Elijah outlived several of his children, but he eventually died, at least 87 years old (perhaps more), at Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, Texas.
