Emma Conrad Diehl's exact parentage is unknown. She was raised by Samuel and Margaret (Conrad) Jay. It is possible that they were her birth parents, born out of wedlock or that Margaret was her birth mother and Samuel adopted her. Emma was born only a few months after Samuel's first wife had died, and she does not appear in any census with Samuel and Margaret Jay. Definitive proof of parentage is still needed. That said, through AncestryDNA Family Circles, it is noteworthy to mention that at least one of her known descendants has been matched to sharing DNA sequence that at least 14 descendants of Samuel's parents also share.

Mrs. Emma Diehl died at the home of her son, Walter Diehl of Cumberland, MD. She was born in Mann Twp. March 5, 1857, and was aged 63 years and 2 days. She was united in marriage with Bernard Diehl, who preceded her to the grave about three years ago. She is survived by the following children: Oliver, Walter, and Miss Mary Diehl, of Cumberland, Md., Mrs. Ella Hemming, of Bedford; Mrs. Irvin O'Neal of Monroe township, and Albert Diehl, of Southampton township. She is also survived by one Brother, Barton Jay, of Clearville R.D.' and the following sisters: Mrs. Martha Dicken, of Letonia, Ohio; Mrs. Maria Knee, Centerville; Mrs. Ella Morgart, of Everett; Mrs. Blanch Hast, of Cumberland, and Mrs. Annie Howsare, of Route 1, Artemas.

Funeral services were held at Chaneysville on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Stickler, of Flintstone officiating. Interment was made at Chaneysville.
