George J. Lockwood was a newspaperman and Pulitzer Prize winner, retiring in 1986 from The Milwaukee, WI, Journal as managing editor-features. He later became executive editor of the St. Joseph, MO, News-Press, retiring in 1995. He was also a distinguished professor at Marshall University in Huntington, WV, and later at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

He was a leader in several press organizations, serving as president of the Inland Press Association in 1985-86. He was born in 1931 to James D. and Evelyn Weinstein Lockwood in Albany, NY, and grew up on a farm in nearby Westerlo. After graduating from Syracuse University and serving in the U.S. Navy, he married, received a master's degree from the University of Minnesota and began his professional career in Milwaukee.
