His father was a successful engineer in Wisconsin and served on the faculty of Stanford University.

Tommy grew up near Madison, Wisconsin and was a proficient sport enthusiast, an avid golfer and iceboater on the many nearby lakes. He attended University of Wisconsin, the Marquette and Dequesne University.

He married Bernardine [Kane] Driscoll, a young widow with three sons. Tommy took the boys to sporting events, including the 1932 Olympic games in Los Angeles, Baseball games at Wrigley Field, air and auto races, USC football games, ice hockey, boxing matches, horse races, track meets, equestrian events in Flitridge, CA, deep-sea fishing trips for tuna, albacore, marlin and bass, and numerous dove and quail hunting trips. He was greatly loved.
