Highland Recorder March 22, 1962

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Monterey Methodist Church for Harry S Johnston, 92, a respected citizen of Monterey for the past 57 years. Mr. Johnston, a retired mail carrier, died early Sunday. March 18 at his home on Spruce Street. He was the first Rural Free Delivery mail carrier in Highland County and served the postal service for 30 years He was born in Greenbrier County, W.Va., a son of John K. and Sally Osborne Johnston and was the last member of that family. His wife. Bessie K. Dickenson Johnston preceded him in death as did a daughter. Mrs. Opal Game. Survivors include three daughters. Mrs. Elva Carpenter. Monterey. Mrs. Walter Tinney, Colonial Heights, and Mrs. C. Harris of Washington, DC; and two sons, Edgar Johnston, Monterey and Melvin Johnston, Blue Grass. He was a member of the Monterey Methodist Church The Rev. Norman A. Compton and the Rev. A.K. Johnson of officiated at the funeral Burial was in Blue Grass Cemetery with Obaugh Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Harry S. Johnston of Monterey celebrated his 92nd birthday at his Spruce Street home Tuesday. Mr. Johnston, one of three known octogenarians in Highland, is a retired mail carrier, who for many years drove a mail hack between Monterey and Staunton.
