Hon John Nelson, Venerable Citizen of Cessna Passes Away
Civil War Veteran

He was a generous Man, a good soldier and a Judge - Sketch of His Life: Hon. John Nelson was born at Spring Mill, Centre county, June 9 1821 and died at his home near Cessna on Monday, September 5.He learned the tailoring trade in his youth, but later abandoned it and took up milling, beginning business at Neffs Mills, Huntingdon County, in 1840. In 1845, he married Miss Elizabeth Heffner, of McConnelstown, who died in 1851. Two years later he was married to Miss Susan Cypher, of Stonerstown. In 1858 the family moved to Bedford, and in 1862, Mr. Nelson enlisted in the service of his country in the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Company K, as a first lieutenant. While stationed at Fairfax Court House, in February, 1863, they were attacked and overpowered by Mosby's guerillas and he received a serious wound in the shoulder and a more serious one in the right leg, necessitating its amputation. He bought a farm and mill near Cessna in 1864 and resided there ever since. His home has always been reputed for its hospitality, and many are those who have enjoyed it. Hon. John Nelson was elected associated judge of Bedford county in 1878 and served for one term. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, a Mason and Odd Fellow. He has been confined to his house during recent years and has suffered almost constantly as a result of his wound, yet he has borne it manfully, presenting to friends and callers, of whom he had many, a hearty welcome to his home and delighting to engage them in conversation. His generosity is attested to all who know him, and he will be sorely missd by the community, in which he is a highly respected citizen. Mr. Nelson's grandfather emigrated from England before the Revolution and served throughout that historic struggle for independence as a fifer and soldier in Washington's army. He is survived by his second wife and the following children by this union: Harry D., Mrs Minnie McCallion and Mrs Estella Walker, of Cessna; Howard B., of Carrolltown Ill.; Mrs. Isadora Geary, of Washington D.C., Charles C. and Mrs. Clara Hoover of Phillipsburg, Mra Alice Imler, of Henderson Md.; Prof. Burton E., Racine Wis; Frank B. of Altoona, and Mrs Nettie V.
