JOHN SHOEMAKER
I'm not sure at this time who John's parents are? John could have been born in either Indiana or Illinois but like most of his extended family starting migrating westward between 1820 and 1830 and ended up in Mercer County. There are so many Shoemaker's with same/similar names it makes tracing this family extremely difficult at times.

John married Elizabeth DeWitt in Montgomery County, Indiana on Feb 4, 1830.

POSSIBLE CHILDREN OF JOHN & ELIZABETH:
William b.1831, Benjamin Franklin b. 1832, Mary Jane "Polly" b.1834, George b.1838, Elias Beason b.1840, Martha b.1842, Harrison B b.1844, Elizabeth b.1849, and John b.1854.

MIGRATION TO MERCER COUNTY
In 1840 John and his family have relocated to Mercer County, Illinois where John will spend the rest of his life. They are listed in the census as John Shoemaker, Head of House Hold, Family Members include: Free White Persons Males - Under 5: 2 (Elias & George); 5 thru 9: 2 (Benjamin & William); 30 thru 39: 1 (John); Females - Under 5: 1 (Margaret); 30 thru 39: 1 (Elizabeth); Persons Employed in Agriculture: 1; No. White Persons over 20 Who Cannot Read and Write: 1; Free White Persons - Under 20: 5; Free White Persons - 20 thru 49: 2; Total Free White Persons: 7.

In the 1850 census they are living just two houses away from Samuel "Furgison" (Ferguson) and his family, Samuel's daughter Susannah Lucinda later married John and Elizabeth's son Benjamin. John's family is listed in Township 15N Range 5W as: John Shoemaker, 48, head, farmer, born Ohio; Elizabeth, 40, born In; William, 19, farmer, born In; Benjamin, 16, farmer, born In; Polly Jane, 15, In; George, 12, Il; Elias, 10, Il; Martha, 8, Il; Harrison, 6, Il; Eliza, 4, Il; Elizabeth, 1, Il. By the birthplaces of the children we can tell that they came to Mercer County between 1835 and 1838.

John Shoemaker died sometime between 1853 and 1855. We know he definitely died before 1860 as his widowed wife Elizabeth (DeWitt) Shoemaker is found living next door to their son Benjamin in Eliza Township.

I found no DOD, death or burial records for John. For now I'm placing him in the Eliza Creek cemetery where other family members are buried until I find out for sure where he is buried. He does possibly have at least one daughter, Sarah J. Shoemaker (1834-1906), buried in the Glancy Cemetery located in Eliza township. There is also a Martha Shoemaker buried there. The DAR transcription of this tombstone in the 1960's reads that she was born on Nov 18,1862 and died Nov 6,1878, at the age 15y 11m 15d. These dates do not fit John's daughter Martha so it could not possibly be her. Shoemaker family lore says that there are four graves in the Glancey Cemetery marked by cedar trees were Shoemaker family members are buried, so it's possible the other two could be John and Elizabeth. I will check all available records and see what I can come up with and update ASAP. Anyone with info to offer would greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!
