George Henry Millard Jr., of Nacogdoches, Texas, died July 9, 2014. He was born Oct. 12, 1931, in Santa Fe, N.M., to George Henry Millard and Jane Carson. Mr. Millard graduated from Henderson High School in Henderson, Texas. He attended Sewanee in Tennessee and Texas A&M University in College Station before graduating from The University of Texas at Austin, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Mr. Millard established Millard Farms in Nacogdoches in 1986 as a poultry farm but soon developed it into a destination for some of the area's best produce. His work with Texas A&M University and Stephen F. Austin State University on cutting-edge techniques like plasticulture earned him the title "pioneer farmer" in the community. Though best known for his farm and the excellence of the produce -- he sold at the Nacogdoches Farmers Market since 2005 -- Mr. Millard's talents reached beyond agriculture. He owned several properties in the community, including Millard's Apple Park subdivision. He also maintained oil and gas leases throughout East Texas. When refugees from Myanmar moved to Nacogdoches to work for Pilgrim's Pride, Mr. Millard helped convert a building on his property to apartments for their residences. He also participated in Christ Episcopal Church's mission to drill clean water wells in Tanzania. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne McCranie Millard, in August 1998. His survivors include his wife, Sarah Alice Millard; son, George Millard III, and daughter-in-law, Teresa, of Nacogdoches; his daughter, Laura Millard, and friend, Troy Ficklin, of Austin; his stepdaughters, Claire Gilmore of Nacogdoches and Johanna Gilmore of Austin; and his step-grandson, Tim Quinn; and step-granddaughter, Taylor Millard of Nacogdoches. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, at Christ Episcopal Church in Nacogdoches followed by the funeral services at 10:30 a.m. and interment at Oak Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jefferson B. Davis, John Mast, Jimmy Mize, Mark Patton, Chris Walker, and Bud Wright. Honorary pallbearers are Sam Bass, Mike Bay, Ron Collins, David Creech, Bryan Davis Jr., Bryan Davis III, John Fleming, Scott Henderson, Earl Herrara, Jere Jackson, Glen Millard, Danny Morton, Roland Muckleroy, John Pack, Bill Patton, Charles Reynolds, Billy Willis, Gayle Wyatt and the McDonald's Coffee Group. Arrangements are under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors. Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors.
