HENRY A. SLACK AND ELIZA E. CARY BURIED

Civil War Veteran and Adopted Sister Die Within Twelve Hours of One Another.

Constant companions for more than fifty years, Henry A. Slack, who died Thursday, and his foster sister, Miss Eliza F. Cary, who died twelve hours later, in their home at 44 South Allen street, were buried yesterday side by side in the Rural cemetery.
In the civil war, Miss Cary, who was the daughter of the late Joseph and Levina Cary, widely-known Quakers, was a nurse in the hospitals and camps of the Union army, in one of which she first met Mr. Slack, who was then Sergeant in the 169th New York Volunteers and had served for three years in the Union lines. Wounds received by Mr. Slack left him a cripple.
Through Miss Cary, her family took an interest in the young soldier, with the result that Mr. Cary adopted him as a son.
Mr. Slack was a naturalist and had written several pamphlets on birds and flowers. Until his eyes were affected several years ago, he taught nature study to a class of boys and girls without compensation.
Miss Cary is survived by one sister, Miss Marie Cary of Albany; Mr. Slack is survived by a sister, Miss Helen Slack of Nassau.
