Ev, as his friends called him, had been Treasurer/Controller of the former Carbon Limestone Company.
He was born Nov. 1, 1929, in Youngstown, a son of Everette E. and Gladys Sanders Byers.
Ev was a 1947 graduate of Chaney, where he lettered three years in baseball and tennis. He served as president of the National Honor Society and his class's mathematics award.
Ev attended Youngstown State University and Denison University, graduating in 1952. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He later attended graduate schools at the Universities of Michigan, Houston, and Youngstown State, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Alpha Phi Omega Fraternities. An avid lover of music, he played numerous instruments, and was the drummer for the popular Rollie Page Orchestra.
Earlier in his career he was involved with Interstate Restaurants, a three-state franchisee of the popular Red Barn Restaurants, and Local Howard Johnston's. He was with Carbon Limestone for 12 years, and upon its sale with its successor, for approximately eight years. He retired in 1992, after a heart attack, but returned working part-time as an accountant, through 2005. Mr. Byers was a former treasurer of the local chapter of the National Association of Credit Management, Youngstown Chamber of Commerce, a Junior Achievement advisor, and was an avid golfer.
Ev was proud that the Byers family was honored as the Mahoning County 1976 Bicentennial Urban family of the year, primarily for their volunteer efforts in the community, at the Canfield Fair.
He married the former Joan "Joannie" Toupin on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 1954, at St. Edward's Church in Youngstown, and had lovingly been by her side for almost 60 years.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Brion, in 1974, and several infant children.
He is also survived by his daughter, Joyce (Denny) Dripps of Hubbard; his son, Brendan, with whom he made is home, his daughter, Kelly (Michael) Koenig of Youngstown, and his son, Terry (Billie Kay) of Austintown. He has six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He and the family wanted to express their appreciation to his long-time physician, Dr. Benjamin Hayek; Dr. Medford B. Mashburn, Medical Director of Hospice of the Valley; all of Hospice of the Valley's wonderful employees and volunteers, who treated him with much compassion and dignity.
Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
