William was the second of three children born to William and Sarah (Downs) Downs. He married Henrietta Sparksin 1823 and they had twelve children: John Thomas, James Mortimor, Fernando DeCoella, William A., Isabella, Mahala, John Wesley, Oscar, Lucy, Josephine, Henrietta Alice and Charley.

Major William Wood Downs died Friday morming, Sept. 22, aged 80 years. Funeral today from the residence of Col. R. B. Parrott; burial at Oakwood Cemetery. Born Weldon, North Carolina, Aug. 12, 1802. To Morgan Co., Ga., as a child, with the family. Married Miss Henrietta Sparks, who survives.
In 1837, to Lawrence Co., Ala. To Waco in 1854. Purchased land in Waco and a planatation on the Brazos south of Waco. Of 10 children, 5 survive: Mrs. J.W. Maddin, wife of Dr. Maddin of Nashville, Tenn.; Mrs. R. B. Parrott; Mrs. John F. Marshall; Major J. W. Downs; and C. M. Downs.
