BRITTON JOURNAL -- Feb. 1937 -- "BRITTON LOSES GRAND OLD LADY -- Grandma Blood Passes To Her Reward After Weeks Of Suffering -- Britton and vicinity will miss the familiar face of Mrs. W. E. Blood, familiarly known as "Grandma Blood" who passed away at her home last Saturday, Feb. 13, after many weeks of suffering. Mrs. Blood had long passed her alloted three score years and ten, as she was 82 years, one month and one day old. Until the last few months her pep and ambition would put to shame a much younger person. Bright and active she was always busy doing something for her family or neighbors. She was the soul of honor and to know her was to love her. Sweet and patient up to the last her thoughts were always of others. She has left to her family and friends a wealth of memories, good ideals and an example of character that will be invaluable to them.
Eliza Ann Munn was born in Essex County, Ontario, Canada on the 12th day of January 1855. She came to the United States with her parents at the age of two years and they settled in Green Lake county, near Kingston, Wis., where she grew to womanhood. Here she met and married William Vern Vaughn in 1870. One daughter, Mrs. W. H. Semple (Jessie), of Nordland township, was born of this union. Mr. Vaughn passed away in 1871. In 1873 she was united in marriage to Willard Elrado Blood, to whom were born seven children, one daughter, Essie May passing away in infancy. The living children are William Vern and Wesley Elhanan, of Isham, Sask., Canada; Leon Elrado, Jay W. and Nellie (Mrs. Wm. Deasy), of Britton and Rolland John, of Marlow, S.D.
Mr. and Mrs. Blood and family came to South Dakota in 1890 and settled on a homestead near Veblen where they resided for 33 years. Retiring from the fram after failing health, Mr. and Mrs. Blood moved to Britton where they have resided since. Mr. Blood passed away on April 14, 1930.
Mrs. Blood always took an active part in every activity of her community. She was greatly interested in the work of the Sunshine society and was a member of the Yoeman lodge. She was a faithful member of the Presbyterian church and attended its services when able. She served for many years as school clerk of LaBelle township during their residence on the farm.
Funeral services were held from the Erbe Funeral Chapel Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. and she was laid to rest in Britton cemetery beside her husband. Pall bearers were her own sons and grandsons, Wesley, Jay, Leon and Ray Blood, Roland and Jay Ostrom, Bruce Semple and Alfred LaMee. Honorary pall bearers were George Elsom, Dan Hill, Aaron Anderson, Ben Hammerstad, Wm. Crockard and Christ Peterson.
Beside her immediately family she leaves several grandchildren and great grandchildren and many friends to mourn her passing.
Deepest sympathy will be extended to the bereaved ones."
