Son of Thomas Cotten (1743 - 1816 MS) and his 2nd wife, Ann. Apparently, Asa's father, Thomas, and his 1st wife's oldest child, born ca 1778, was also named Asa Bluitt, both born in Edgefield, SC.

Younger son, Abner is found in the 1860 Federal Census, Franklin Co., MS, with his oldest sister, Cassandra and her husband. Two other children (Jepth Van and Josephine) who would have been minors in 1860 are not found on a census in Amite, Franklin, nor Pike Counties, MS.
