James Anderson Cartmill was the son of David Cartmill & Sally "Sarah" Dudding. John was the husband to Lucy Ann Chapman. James and Lucy were parents to 10 children; Charles Reverend Cartmill, Sadie Eugenia Cartmill, James Loyd Cartmill, Bessie May Cartmill, Joanna Blanche Cartmill, Mamie Eunace Cartmill, Edna Cartmill, Susan Lois Cartmill, William Morris Cartmill and Carl T. Cartmill.

James also took three of his Nephews after the deaths of his sister, Sarah M. Cartmill and her husband John T. Hamilton. 1880 Census, William (Wm.) Hamilton 21, nephew. Charles F. Hamilton 12, nephew. John T. Hamilton Jr 7, nephew.

James service in the Civil War, files desigation XC 919680, James A. Cartmill, Veterans Benefits Office, Washington, D. C., res. of Hartford, W. Va. age 18y, enlisted on 15 Aug. 1862, enrolled and mustered in on 8 Oct. 1862 in Pt. Pleasant, W. Va. Mustered out in Wheeling, W. Va. on 22 June 1865. Pvt. in Co. D, 13th regt. of W. Va. Infantry. At Camp Russell, Va. 6 Dec 1864, Capt. Simon Williams Co., Michael Raseberry 2nd Lieut.

James was constable in Hartford for a number of years and was Mayor of Hartford, W. Va. in 1915.

James A. Cartmille, 88 years old, of Milton, died in his home yesterday. Surviving him are his widow, 2 sons, R.R. of Milton, & Wm. of Huntington; 4 daus, Mrs. Anna Gotshall of Huntington, Mrs. Susie Cart of Pittsburg, Mrs. Edna Cart of South Side, W. Va. & Mrs Mayme Cartmille at home.

Anyone who is related to this family and may have information on the Hamilton children please contact me. John T. Hamilton and Sarah M. Cartmill Hamilton are my gg grandparents. I am looking for missing pieces to my family history which relate to this family.
