James and Lucy were parents to 10 children; Charles Reverend Cartmill, Sadie Eugenia Cartmill, James Loyd Cartmill, Bessie May Cartmill, Joanna Blanche Cartmill, Mamie Eunace Cartmill, Edna Cartmill, Susan Lois Cartmill, William Morris Cartmill and Carl T. Cartmill.
James also took three of his Nephews after the deaths of his sister, Sarah M. Cartmill and her husband John T. Hamilton. 1880 Census, William (Wm.) Hamilton 21, nephew. Charles F. Hamilton 12, nephew. John T. Hamilton Jr 7, nephew.

At Camp Russell, Va. 6 Dec 1864, Capt. Simon Williams Co., Michael Raseberry 2nd Lieut.
James was constable in Hartford for a number of years and was Mayor of Hartford, W. Va. in 1915.
