John Samuel Stephenson

John Samuel Stephenson was born in Clarke county, Iowa, January 9, 1860, and departed this life January 8, 1917, aged 56 years, 11 months and 29 days. He was the third child of John and Martha Stephenson. His father departed this life November 9, 1914. He is survived by his wife, four children, mother, two brothers and two sisters.

He spent his entire life in this county except five and one-half years which he spent in Kansas.

He was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Piper April 20, 1884. To this union was born five children, Winifred L. Burgus, John L., Frankie deceased, Fred D. and Glen H., all of whom except the deceased are living in Clarke county and were present at the funeral.

Mr. Stephenson suffered about two and one-half years and through it all was a patient and kind, ever appreciative of the kindness of loved ones and friends. He was a kind father and companion, a good neighbor and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. conducted by Rev. J. C. Leonard assisted by Rev. Haverfield. The large concourse of people attending the services testified to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The body was laid to rest on the hilltop in the beautiful cemetery just east of frame church. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the community.
