LEON EARL "EARL" ENFIELD

January 10, 1917 ~ February 27, 2010

Leon Earl Enfield, age 93, a longtime resident of Vancouver, WA, died in Columbus, GA on Saturday, February 27, 2010. He was born in Benkelman, Nebraska on January 10, 1917. During the Great Depression, he attended high school in Walthill, Nebraska, where he helped out his family by working as an itinerant farm worker and, when he could, participated in the Golden Gloves boxing program. After graduation from high school, Earl made his way to the Pacific Northwest, where he said he felt at home in the tall trees and green forests. He joined the U.S Army at Fort Lewis, and was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. He married Verneta Mae Truitt on December 21, 1940. Earl relocated to Clark County with others in his family, and worked in the west coast shipyards during most of World War II. He served in the Army again in 1945, trained as a Paratrooper at Fort Benning, GA, and received an honorable discharge in 1946.

After the war, Earl studied electrical engineering at the University of Nebraska under the GI Bill, completing an Associate in Applied Science degree in 1949. He worked as a sheet metal specialist for many years in the aerospace industry in California, retiring from Bendix Aviation in 1982 and returning to Vancouver. Here he volunteered with the Master Gardener program, and sustained his life-long love of music by singing as a member of a local chorus. He moved with his wife to Columbus, GA in 2007.

He is survived by his wife, Verneta; and two sons, Roger Earl and Ronald Lee; and three grandchildren.
