VICTORIA - John F. Brimberry, age 81, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2014 at his home in Victoria, Texas, surrounded by family. He was born on February 18, 1933 in Grapeland, Texas to the late John A. and Lillie Spruill Brimberry.

John grew up in Grapeland, Texas and helped his family run Brimberry's Food Store until he graduated from Grapeland High School in 1950. John attended Sam Houston State University and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science. He enlisted in the US Army and served two years as a helicopter mechanic. After his military service, John returned to Sam Houston, where he earned a Master's of Science in Agricultural Education in 1957. That same year, John married Alice Brown of Houston, Texas.

They began their life together in Houston where John began work for Prudential Insurance Company. In 1962, John joined Blake-Malone Insurance Agency as a partner and continued his work in the insurance business for many years. In 1964, John moved with his family to Victoria and became a partner in Vrazel Insurance Agency. John was instrumental in merging the Agency with other local Agencies to form Professional Insurance Agents, Inc. (PIA) in 1971. As Chairman of PIA, Inc., John aided in the sale of PIA to Frost Bank to become the foundation Insurance Agency for Frost. He served as President and Chairman of Frost Insurance until his retirement in 2008. During his 48-year business career, John served as President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas from 1982 to 1983, the Community Director of Central Power and Light Corporation, Board Member and Officer of the Texas Association of Business and Chambers of Commerce, and member of numerous Insurance Company and Agency Councils.

In addition to serving the insurance field, John also served his community and his church. John was a Founding Director and Past Chairman of the Victoria College Foundation. He was a Founding Officer and Director of the Victoria Economic Development Corporation and served in other civic activities and organizations including: Past President of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, Past Chairman of the Victoria Cultural Council, Board Member of United Way, Past Chairman of the Boy Scouts of America South Texas Council, Founding Director and participant in the Fellowship of Christians Insurance, Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees for The First United Methodist Church, and Board Member of the Board of the Trustees of the Southwest Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church.

John was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He provided unconditional love and support to his wife, daughters, and grandchildren and was a constant cheerleader at all of their academic and sporting events. In addition, John was an invaluable source of knowledge and guidance, imparting many life lessons along the way. His love and wisdom extended past his family to many friends as well, serving as a mentor to many people. In his spare time, John found joy in fly fishing, hunting, golfing, photography, gardening, and traveling with his family. He was loved and cared for by everyone who knew him and will be truly missed.

During the last few months of his life, John and his family were very grateful for the gentle care and compassion given by his doctors and constant caregivers.

John is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Alice Brimberry of Victoria; daughters Lisa Brimberry of Victoria and Lea Brimberry (Maurice Allison) of Cedar Park; grandchildren Sarah Moehrig (Jeff), Emily Skipper, and John Gage Skipper. He is also survived by his brother, Wade Brimberry of Crockett and many extended relatives and close friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Merle Brimberry, and his sister Dorothy Hagens.

Graveside services will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery, Victoria.
