Born in New York, Ella was the daughter of William and Mary (Poucher) Stanton. She married George Willard Taft in the late 1920's. In February of 1930, they welcomed a son, Charles. In May of 1935, they had a daughter, Nancy. Due to her alcoholism, George divorced Ella and gained custody of the children. She then lived in Springfield, MA, working as a cook. Ella was 60 when she got cervical cancer. She died on a snowy day in March. She's buried not too far from her daughter-in-law, Adelaide Taft.
