Robert served in the Mexican War, HC Co D 5 Indiana Volunteers, from October 8,1847 to July 28, 1948.

He also served in the Civil War, 99th IN Regiment, Co B. Commissioned an 2nd Lt. on August 13, 1862. Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 22 Jan 1863. Promoted to Full Captain on 06 Jan 1864. He was injured at Atlanta, GA on July 22nd, 1864 and mustered out with a disability disharge on 14 Dec 1864.
