Gerald the son of Gerard A. Letendre and Agnes Letendre of East Longmeadow MA enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on May 28 1964 in Hartford CT. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company E, 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of March the Battalion participated in combat operations in the Dai Loc District of Quang Nam Province. On March 18 the Battalion participated on Operation KING with Company E placed under the OPCON of the 3d Battalion, 3d Marines during the late stages of the operation. On March 25, Company E was attacked by the enemy in the vicinity of the Cam Van village complex in an area which would be known to Marines as "DODGE CITY'. Hit with a barrage of mortar, RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) fire, and small arms the Marines suffered eight men killed in action and twelve wounded. LCpl was one of the casualties, he was killed by fragmentation wounds from a hostile explosive device.
