He was a retired pediatrician for more than 40 years and a former LSU Medical School faculty member. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Visiting at Welsh Funeral Home, 6700 Florida Blvd., 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday. Religious services at First United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. Chris Andrews. Burial in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Ledaire and William Hickey, Baton Rouge, Ruth and Joe Roos, Spring, Texas, and Frances and Manfred Hansen, Caracas, Venezuela; two sisters, Mrs. William J. (Ruth) Beard and Mrs. Dalcho (Lewise) Barnett, both of Baton Rouge; a brother, John L. Avant, Pride; four grandchildren, Susan H. Smith, Michael Hickey and Eric and Earl Roos; and three great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by wife, Evelyn R. Avant; and parents, James A. Sr. and Jessie Dean Martin Avant. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, attended Bluff Creek Baptist Church, Bluff Creek, East Baton Rouge Parish Medical Society, and American Academy of Pediatrics, Capitol Lodge No. 399 F&AM and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a 1946 graduate of LSU Medical School and received a master's degree in English and Social Welfare. Memorial donations may be made to Bluff Creek Baptist Church, First United Methodist Church or to a favorite charity.
