Elmo J. Walter Jr., 84, of Homosassa, Fla., formerly of Vandergrift, died Saturday, June 21, 2014, in Oak Hill Hospital, Brooksville, Fla. Born April 10, 1930, in Vandergrift, he was a son of the late Elmo and Elizabeth (Murphy) Walter. Elmo had owned and operated Walter Optical Lab in Vandergrift for 38 years prior to retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Vandergrift Presbyterian Church and a member of the F and AM Lodge No. 617 and the American Legion Post No. 114, both in Vandergrift, and he enjoyed golfing. Survivors include his daughter, Katey (David) Rayburn, of Michigan; two granddaughters, Nicole (John) Stachowicz, of Minnesota, and Rebecca Rayburn, of Allison Park; and two great-grandchildren, Ian and Isabelle Wallace. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael James Walter. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the DUNMIRE-KERR and ROWE FUNERAL HOME INC., 244 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift, where services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Neal Galley officiating. Interment will be in the Vandergrift Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Diabetes Research of Children's Hospital, 4401 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15224.
