John S. Long was a private in the 73rd Infantry of Company C during the Civil War. His Civil War record lists him as 5'6" with light hair, dark complexion and hazel eyes, single, and a farmer in Vermilion County, IL. He joined the Union forces on August 5, 1862 and was mustered in on Aug.21, 1862 at Camp Butler, IL. He served for three years and was discharged on January 13, 1863 due to wounds received in Louisville, Kentucky on October 8, 1862 (probably the Battle of Perryville). He died six days later on January 19, 1863 aat the age of 20.
