He married Catherine Missouri Miller Sept. 26, 1878 in Newton, NC. After she died, he married Barbara Alice Whisnant Oct. 4, 1885 in Hickory, NC. He had two children by his first wife; Abel Pinkney Whitener and Mary I. Whitener. Peter was buried at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery.
