John and Charlotte Dale came to Appanoose County from Kentucky in 1853 with their family of 5 children, America, Louise, Mary Elizabeth, James, and Amanda. They purchased land from John Leonard in Section 20 of Center Twp., northeast of Centerville.
Mr. Dale was a resident of Appanoose County for nearly half a century. He was unusually successful in his financial affairs. By the time of his death, he was owner of about 1100 acres of land besides other interests. His son James was 14 when they came to Iowa. He also became a prominent businessman. He was married to Miss Melinda Long in 1861.
