John Laban Whitener, son of Andrew Michael Whitener and Sina Seitz Whitener, was born Sept. 22, 1844 in Catawba Co., NC and was baptized the 6th of October 1844, the first Sunday.

John Laban Whitener, Private, was born in Burke County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Burke Co., at age 17, October 15, 1861. Reported present during January - April 1862. Wounded in the knee at Fredericksburg, Virginia December 13, 1862. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia where he died on Jan. 7, 1863 of wounds. Served in Co. K 35th Regiment.
