John Allen Catey
1930 ~ 2014

John Allen Catey, age 83, of Boise, died Tuesday June 24, 2014 at home of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). His children and special friend were with him and supported him.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 10:00 am at Cloverdale Funeral Home. The Reverend Ralph Lawrence will officiate. Burial will follow at Cloverdale Memorial Park.
John was born on September 11, 1930 in Grand Ledge Michigan, son of Wilford and Frances (Strange) Catey, the oldest of 9 children. He grew up on Cloverdale Farm on Strange Highway in Grand Ledge, attending Strange School, one of the few remaining one-room school houses in the country. He graduated at the age of 16 from Grand Ledge High School in 1947, active in his Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter. He continued to help his father farm until he met his future wife, Dorothy Mikesell, while drag racing on Strange Highway. They married on September 23, 1950 in Lansing Michigan.
John's first job after marriage was as a herdsman at Crapo Farms located in Swartz Creek MI. From there, he ran the Cecil and Nina Myers dairy farm in Howell MI and started his education at Michigan State University taking night short-courses. This took him back to Grand Ledge and part-time farming while he went to Michigan State full time and received his Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Agricultural Economics. From there he was the 4-H agent for Montcalm County for 1 year; then County Agricultural Agent in Mecosta County for 2 years. Then Ore-Ida Foods Inc. came to Michigan and hired John as the field manager at the Greenville MI site in 1964. He then moved to Ontario OR in 1969, then Boise ID as general manager of agricultural operations in 1970. He was then Vice President of Procurement from 1977 until 1987 when he retired. John was active in the agricultural community, serving as chairman of the Idaho Potato Commission, member of the agriculture and crop protection committee of the American Frozen Foods Institute, a member of the American Farm Economic Association, and the American Potato Association and the board of directors for the Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry.
After retirement, he and Dorothy traveled the US in their 5th-wheeler to such places as Arizona, northeastern US, Florida, California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. They traveled internationally to such places as Japan, New Zealand, Austria, England, Ireland, Switzerland, and Germany. But, his favorite place was the cabin at Warm Lake where he and Dorothy spent many summers working at fixing up and relaxing. His well-earned shared retirement with Dorothy was abruptly ended with the unexpected death of Dorothy on November 27, 1992. He found love again and married Ember Celany in 1994 and they spent many years also doing more traveling around the world. It was during this time that Ember introduced him to the Overs and Unders Club. He made many friends through this group of people that stuck with him, even after Ember's death on September 28, 2009. John found happiness and love again at the Elks weekly dancing when we he met Geri Worthington. Geri provided much needed love and support until he died.
Survivors include his 4 children and their spouses: Susan (Leo) Nickasch, Neenah WI; Alice (Rick) Beveridge, Boise ID; Jennifer (Joe) Quirk, Longview WA; and Jeff (Monika) Catey, Moses Lake WA; and grandchildren Cheryl (Mike) Aguilera, Kirkland WA; Tricia Beveridge and fiancé Kean-san Choo, Boise ID; Jyl and Dave Glancey, Boise; Kelly Quirk, Portland OR; Erin and Matt Janiga, Washington DC; Tracy and Joe Solis, Colfax WA; and Dorothy and Warren Catey, Moses Lake WA and 5 great-grandchildren and 2 more expected in 2014. He is also survived by step-daughters Rolaynne (Roger) Grow, Grand Rapids MI and JoAnn (Arvids) Judzis, Houston TX. John is also survived by brothers Joe Catey, Muskegon MI; Lloyd Catey, FL; Tom Catey, Gladwin, MI; and Sam Catey, Grand Ledge MI; and sisters Fanny O'Neil, FL and Mary Hahn, Grand Ledge MI. He proceeded in death by his wife of 42 years, Dorothy Catey, second wife Ember Catey, his parents and brothers Dan and Charles Catey.
The family would like to thank Dr. East and Bethany; Cypress from St. Alphonsus Home Health; Michelle and Judy from St. Alphonsus Hospice; and a special thank you to John's special friend Geri Worthington.
