Oliver M. Soberg was born November 7, 1902, in New Prairie Township. She was the eighth child of fourteen born to Erick and Marie Hoium. she was baptized Nov. 30, 1902 and confirmed July 29, 1917 by Rev. Forde at St. John's Church in New Prairie. On April 1, 1931, she was united in marriage with Grant Soberg.
She was employed as a nurses aide at Knute Nelson Memorial Home for many years and continued to perform volunteer work until her death. She spent many hours visiting residents of the Bethany Home and the Knute Nelson Home. Olive was an active member of First Lutheran Church of Alexandria for more than 50 years. She belonged to many organizations within the church and performed many volunteer tasks. A twenty-year resident of the Viking Towers, Olive appreciated her many friends and their frequent visits.
Olive died at the Douglas County Hospital September 11, 1991 at the age of 88 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers, two sisters, daughter and great granddaughter. She is survived by five of her children and their spouses: Gudron and husband Fred Lowder of Escondido, CA; Lenora and husband Milton Ley of St. Cloud; David and wife Elaine of Minneapolis; Darlene Soberg of Minneapolis; Wanda and husband Leroy Karrow of Alexandria. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, four sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services were held September 15, 1991 at First Lutheran Church of Alexandria with Rev. Ron Otterson and Rev. Keith Lentz officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Alexandria. Pallbearers were grandsons Keith Ley, David Lowder, Kevin Ley, Michael Karrow, Scott Soberg, Stephen Soberg and nephew Jimmy Soberg.
