Mr. A. Eugene "Junior" Appleby, 92, of Middletown, died Saturday June 21, 2014 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Lee Keeney Appleby who predeceased him in 2000.

Born in new Windsor on July 31, 1921 he was a son of the late H. Carter and Rae V. Lambert Appleby.

Survivors include: 1 son - Gene L. Appleby and wife Martha - Middletown 1 daughter - Gail M. Mathews and husband John - Walkersville, 2 grandchildren - Clinton E. Appleby of Middletown and Jami L. Durrschmidt and husband Andrew of Emmitsburg, 2 great-granddaughters - Leyna N. Durrschmidt and Cora Jane Durrschmidt, 1 sister - Nancy A. Hevner - Colombia, PA.

His brother, Leonard C. Appleby, predeceased him in 2002.

Mr. Appleby was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown, where he served several terms on the Church Council and a secretary of the Council for many years, as an Assisting Minister, secretary of the Men's Bible Class, various committees, and on the Cemetery board. He also sang in the Senior Choir for a number of years.

He enlisted in the United States Regular Army in November 1940 and was assigned to the Army Air Corps, Langley Field, VA, where he served in the military police units and attended Military Police School, Buckley Field, CO. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Technical Sergeant in November 1945.

In December 1945 he was employed by the Maryland State Police as a Police Communications Operator and served at the Randallstown, Conowingo, and Frederick Barracks, retiring in January of 1986 with 40 years of service. In 1987 he joined their newly developed Volunteers in Police Support program and served there. He was a member of the Maryland State Police Alumni Association.

The family will receive friends on Friday June 27 in the chapel of Zion Lutheran Church, 107 W. Main St., Middletown from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral services will be held 11 AM on Saturday June 28 from the church. The family will also receive friends one hour prior to the church service. Rev. Ron Reaves will officiate. Interment will be private in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of the church.
