Sam was born with only one face, but as a young man he suffered a devastating, difiguring accident. On the way to a club, he and some friends walked past an establishment that steam-cleaned fifty -five gallon metal drums that held gasoline. Sam threw a lit cigarette into a drum. The resulting explosion burned off his face and the bottom of his arm (Which was, fortunately, covering his eyes). He spent a year in the hospital then moved to a nursing home. The bones in his face were visible, so a mask was made to let him go out in public. He worked for Pete Kortes Sideshow. He also worked for ringling Bros and Clyde Beatty Circus. He was responsible for rescuing the pinhead Schlitzie from being institutionalized. He underwent over seventy-two operations on his face.
