Mary A. "Polly" King was born on Mar. 7, 1854 in Whitley Co., Kentucky. The area she was born in is now a part of McCreary Co., KY. According to her birth record Polly was the daughter of Burl King and a "Miss Spradlin" (given name unknown).

Burl was newly married (May 20, 1953) to his third wife, Mary Margaret "Margia" Foster (1835-1884), when Polly, an old-time nickname for Mary, was born out of wedlock. Nothing is known of Polly's mother except that she was unmarried and that her maiden name was Spradlin.

Did Polly's mother die in childbirth or was she unable or just unwilling to take care of Polly? Unknown. Regardless of the reason, Polly was raised by Burl and Margia as their own child. Polly appears in their household in the 1860 and 1870 US Censuses.

Polly named her second son after her father, "Dipen" Burl King (1825-1917), a farmer and layman lawyer. He was the son of Thomas Murray "Tom" King (1790-1880) and Mary Rebecca "Polly" Cox (1800-1881). Polly's father was nicknamed "Dipen" for his habit of saying "Well now, that dipen" (depends).

Polly's grandfather, Thomas Murray "Tom" King, was the patriarch of the King family in Whitley Co./McCreary Co. having moved to the Marsh Creek area from Campbell Co., Tennessee about 1819. He is said to have eventually owned 2000+ acres of land in the present day rural areas of Kingtown, Pine Knot and Marsh Creek.

In 1873, Polly married William Eli Spradlin (1852-1909) in Whitley Co., KY. He was the son of William M. Spradlin (1814-1901) and Ella "Elly" Waters (1814-1860), both born in Wayne Co., KY.

Polly and Eli were married for about 22 years and had six known children. They were Jeptha P. "Jep" Spradlin (1874-1946), Burrel Spradlin (1877-1894), Ambrose M. Spradlin (1877-1974), William Beaty Spradlin (1880-1964), Elisha Edward Spradlin (1882-1957) and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Spradlin (1883-1971).

Polly died on Aug. 9, 1895 is Scott Co., TN at the relatively young age of 41. It is thought that she was buried on her father's farm in what is now known as the Burl King Cemetery (according to her death certificate) with just a field stone for a marker. Nearly one third of the markers in this cemetery are field stones that have no markings or are now unreadable.

Polly's father (Burl King), who the cemetery was named for, is buried here as well as is his third wife, Margia, who was the first burial in 1884. Polly's half brother, Isham King (1862-1899) is buried here along with his two half sisters, Margaret "Margie" (King) Coffey Crabtree (1870-1921) and Tabitha R. "Tabby" King (1866-1926).

Following Polly's death, husband Eli lived another 14 years. He remarried on March 1, 1900, marrying widower, Sarah Emily (Acres) Abbott (1864-1932).

Polly's husband, Eli, died on Mar. 26, 1909 at the age of 56. He is buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery located in Scott Co., TN. His second wife, Sarah, died in 1932 and is buried next to him.
