CHRISTI, Angela. Long-time South Florida radio host and stage actress Angela Christi passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 after a four-year battle with cancer. Angela was born June 10, 1947 in Nashville, Tennessee and as a child moved with her family to Miami in 1949. Her love of words expressed itself early as a writer for The Guardian, her grade school newspaper at Corpus Christi Catholic School. She continued to write for The Courier at Notre Dame Academy and contributed articles to The Voice, the diocesan newspaper. Her love of writing complemented her talent in theater and voice. She polished those skills as a student in productions for the drama departments of Barry College and Florida State University where her portrayal of Eleanor of Aquitaine in a production of The Lion in Winter won accolades. This opened the door for performances with the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, summer stock in Falmouth, Massachusetts, and a long run performing a range of dramatic and comedic roles for The Players Theater in Miami and the Coconut Grove Playhouse. Along the way, she found time to pen plays for children's theater, perform in a trio with her sisters Dianne and Ina, participate in area choirs as a soloist (mezzo soprano), sing in the chorus for the Greater Miami Opera and teach English as a second language. Popular host at WTMI-FM (93.1) for 15 years, she entertained South Florida audiences with clever commentary about classical works and their composers as well as contemporary Broadway scores from the world of musical theater. Angela provided voice talent for numerous radio commercials and public service announcements, including voice-over work for a fledgling company during her decade-long stay in New York that would become Nickolodeon. She was a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) and Equity. She was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Ina Kathleen McClanahan and sister, Dianne Marie Pastirchak. Survivors include her father, Michael Assalone; sisters Ina (Joe) Humkey; Mary (Frank) Norris; Fran (Dary) Matera and brother James (Barbara) Assalone. Angela cherished her nephews Christopher (Lee) DiMella, Timothy (Kathy) DiMella, Terrence Pastirchak, Justin (Natalie) Gilmore, Ryan (Cynthia) Norris, Cody Matera and niece Kate Norris as well as grand nephews Nicholas DiMella and twins Michael and Mason Gilmore. She delighted in close ties with her caring circle of friends from her years in Miami radio and theater among them the late Jack Metzger, Ken Martin, Jonathan Mandell, Barbara Lowery, Mark Hart and Bonnie Berman. Angela offered her abundant love, light and laughter to her extended family and friends, an angel among us who cared for us all body and soul. Visitation 6 pm until Service 7 pm Saturday April 6, 2013, followed by a reception all at VAN ORSDEL CORAL GABLES CHAPEL.
