Mr. Bayles was born April 27, 1921 in Carlock, the son of Louis Thomas Bayles and Eleta Anna Layten Bayles. He married Viola M. Wellenreiter on Jan. 15, 1944 in Montgomery, Alabama. She survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Connie B. (Kelly) Smith; one son, Gregory R. Bayles; two sisters, Fern Munson and Ila (Floyd) Haag and one brother, Glenn (Edith) Bayles. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Christine Bayles, Carrie Bayles, Callie Cozzolino, Brandon Bayles and Layne Cozzolino.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Mr. Bayles served in the U.S. Army 106th Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Bronze Star for heroic achievements in connection with military operations against the enemy on Dec. 16, 1944.
He was a home builder and owner of Bayles Real Estate. He served as a member of the Town of Normal Parks and Recreation Committee when the town purchased Fairview Park. Mr. Bayles was also an honorary lifetime member of the Bloomington-Normal Home Builders Association.
Mr. Bayles served as an elder at Trinity Lutheran Church and was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of the Normal Kiwanis Club, American Legion Carl Martin Post No. 635 and the John H. Kraus Post 454 VFW.
He was an avid supporter of ISU Redbird basketball and a member of the Redbird Club for more than 25 years.
