Alonzo A. Jones, age 84 years, a resident of Valparaiso for more than 80 years, died this morning at 11:45 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Roy Chester, 253 South Valparaiso street, where he had resided for the last six years. He was stricken five weeks ago. His death occurred on his mother's birthday anniversary.
The decedent was born in Illinois on May 26, 1857, a son of Allen P. Jones and Caroline (Smith) Jones and came to Valparaiso with his parents when he was two years of age.
For (?) years he was engaged in the transfer business retiring 22 years ago because of ill health.
Services Incomplete
On March 4, 1878, he was united in marriage to Iretta Hunt, who died on Oct. 9, 1919. To this union were born six children, four of whom survive as follows: Mrs. Clara Bright, Mrs. Ethel Chester, Mrs. Bessie Pence and Mrs. Loretta Evans, all of Valparaiso. A son, James A. Jones, for many years engaged in police work, died in May, 1940, and a daughter, Grace, on July 20, 1930. Also surviving are 29 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Jane Heck of Council Bluffs, Ia., and two brothers, Cassius Jones of Valparaiso and Charles Jones of Inglewood, Calif.
Mr. Jones was for many years a member of the Methodist church.
Memorial arrangements have not been completed and will be announced tomorrow. Friends may call at the Chester home, 253 Valparaiso street, after 1 p.m. Wednesday.
