United States Army General. A veteran of World Wars I and II, he rose in rank to become the special assistant to General Dwight D. Eisenhower at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe. After graduating from high school in Montgomery, Alabama in entered Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in Auburn, Alabama, and graduated in 1916 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1917 he entered the US Army Coast Guard Artillery and served in the American Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War I. In 1944, while serving in Europe during World War II, he was promoted to the rank of major general. From 1948 until his initial retirement in September 1949, he was in charge of the Department of Defense's Office of Legislative Liaison. After his military retirement he became superintendent of the Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Virginia until January 1951 when he was called back to active duty to become General Eisenhower's special assistant at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe until 1952, when he finally retired at the rank of major general with 34 years of total military service. Among his military and foreign decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the World War I Victory Medal, the European, African, and Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Defense Medal, the Brazilian Cross of the Sun, the Brazilian Medal of War, and the Ecuadorian Abdon Calderon. He then worked on Eisenhower's presidential campaign and after Eisenhower became President in January 1953, he became his deputy assistant. In October 1958 he became Eisenhower's White House Chief of Staff, serving until January 1961. He died at the age of 81.
