James O'Dell

James A. O'Dell, 45, 210 1/2 S. Sherman St., collapsed and died suddenly about 11:20 p.m. Sunday at the home of a half-sister, Mrs. Isabell Otto, 215 W. North St.
O'Dell, who had been ill over the weekend, had refused medical attention and resisted attempts by his family and friends to help him. He had finally consented to go to the sister's home when his residence became too cold yesterday.
Phillip Slack, Jr., Clay County Coroner, investigated and reported this morning that O'Dell's death resulted from the combined effects of overexposure and malnutrition.
Although he had not worked recently, Mr. O'Dell had been a welder and had been employed in pipeline construction. He also had lived in Indianapolis for a while when he was welding for a metal fabricating plant in the capitol city.
He was born in Brazil on October 2, 1926, and resided here most of his life. His parents were the late Fred O'Dell and Flonnie O'Dell Phelps.
A veteran of the Korean War, he was a cook in the Army and later managed a mess hall for an artillery unit in Korea. He originally had volunteered for military duty at age 16 by giving an incorrect birth date to an enlistment office.
Surviving are four half-sisters, Mrs. Otto, Mrs. Betty Franklin and Mrs. Geneva Jennings, all of Brazil; and Mrs. Doris Richardson, Rockford, Ill.; two half-brothers, Acey Johnson, Niles, Mich.; and Harold Johnson, Kalamazoo, Mich.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Services will be conducted in Miller and Sons Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Bro. Orville L. Rader will officiate with interment to follow in Cottage Hill Cemetery.
Friends may begin calling to pay their respects at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Tuesday.
