Arthur F. Howard, 90, of Auburn died Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis.
Arthur was born July 31, 1923, in Dundee, Illinois, to Arthur E. and Louise (Brown) Howard. His father was a well-known breeder of Holstein cattle. He had brothers Robert and Ralph and a sister Dorothy Gromer, and they have preceded him in death.
He attended Blackburn College and received an Associate Degree in 1943. He worked for the University of Illinois for 14 months as a Dairy Herd Improvement Supervisor before entering the Army. He served in the Luzon campaign and then occupation duty in Korea. He was a Tech Sgt. and Sgt. Major in his personnel unit.
He then attended the University of Illinois and graduated with a degree in Agriculture. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and was a member of the Dairy Judging Team.
In 1948, he started work in Elkhart County, Ind., as an Extension Educator with the special assignment as Dairy Specialist working with Holstein, Guernsey, Jersey and other dairy related groups. He also worked with 4-H clubs in Elkhart County. Then came a period of 18 years in Noble County as Extension Educator specializing in livestock programs. His post retirement work was in banking for 24 years including 14 years for Grabill Bank.
His love of music was expressed by singing in choirs for more than 60 years, and helping organize the Hoosier Chorale. He was a member of the Menno Singers in Goshen.
In 1951, he married Mary Jeanne Nees of Claypool. They have two daughters, Anena (Ken) Rolofson of Kendallville, and Diane (John) Stebbe of Indianapolis; and four grandchildren, Blake, Claire and Brynn Stebbe and Lee Rolofson.
He was active in a number of organizations including 43 years in Rotary. In the Masonic Lodge he was a member and Past Master of Albion Lodge # 97, as well as the Scottish Rite. He was an active member of the Auburn First Methodist Church and served in several leadership positions. He was a volunteer at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum for fifteen years.
A graveside service will take place at the Akron Cemetery in Akron, Indiana, with military graveside honors being conducted by the United States Army.
