Henry Alford Mathis dies in Salt Lake

Henary Alford Mathis, 67, of Ely, a lifetime resident of Nevada, ied early Saturday morning in a Salt Lake City hospital after a long illness.

Mr Mathis was born October 20, 1889 in Ursine, Nevada, to Isaac B and Elvira Wilson Mathis. He lived in Ursine and Delamar and moved with his parents to Lund when he was 10 years of age. He served with the First division, 18th Infantry, in France during World War I and was with the Army of Occupation in Germany. After the war, he worked at Ruth for the Nevada Consolidated Coppermines Company for 20 years before becoming a driller for the Isabel Construction Company for whom he worked until ill health forced his retirement two and one-half years ago. He was married May 14, 1932 in Kingman, Arizona to Eva Jessen.

He was a member of the LDS Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving in addition to Mrs Mathis are a daughter, Miss Betty Jean Mathis of Salt Lake City, a foster son, Elden Jessen of Provo, Utah; a brother, Lewis Mathis of Kimberly; two sisters, Mrs Etta Nicholas and Mrs Ida Ashworth, both of Ely, and a number of nieces and nephews. A daughter, Bernice Ann died in infancy.

Funeral services will be conducted at the LDS Church Friday at 2 pm. The First Ward LDS Church and the VFW will officiate and internment will be at the Ely Cemetery under direction of the Wilson-Bates Chapel.
