Vernice Crego Friend died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002 at the Cook Nursing Home. She was born on March 4, 1926, in Hawley, Minn., and moved with her family to Orr, where she attended school.
She met and married Lyle Crego in Orr in 1944. They had lived in Orr, Mt. Iron, Hibbing and Minneapolis. After Lyle's death in 1968, she returned to Hibbing.
She married Solomon 'Sully' Friend in Hibbing on June 14, 1969. They moved to Gheen in 1971, where they resided for nearly 25 years. She has been making her residence at the Cook Nursing Home the past seven years. She attended Catholic services at the nursing home and enjoyed spending the holidays with her family. She had liked gardening, crocheting, sewing and enjoyed being outdoors.
She is survived by her sons: Lyle (Nancy) Crego, and Michael Crego; daughters: Francine Friend, Pamela Crego, Rene (Ernie) Barto, and Roxanne (Joel) Swygman; step-sons: Mike Friend, Terry Friend, Larry (Cindy) Friend, Tom Friend and Ron Friend;sisters: DeVaughn (Fred) Meyers, and Avis Kin;, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Lyle Crego in 1968; daughters, Candy Sykes in 1976, and Sharon Hemenway in 1992; three brothers, Caroll 'Lindy,' Donald and Keith Schloesser.
