Charles Edward "Charley" Thrap is the son of Levi Edward Thrap and Leora Edna Wood. Charles married Florence Arlene Wilson on November 18, 1932 at Eureka, California. Charles and Florence had two children.

Services will be held Monday for Charles "Charley" Thrap who passed away March 14, 2002 in Eureka. He was a long time resident of Fortuna.

He was born on July 5, 1909 on Pine Hill [Eureka] to Levi and Leora Edna Thrap. At the age of 3 weeks he traveled with his mother to the family home in the Mattole Valley, a trip that took three and a half days. He lived in Mattole until moving in 1936 to the Eel River Valley with his wife Florence and their daughter. He lived there the rest of his life, since 1953 at the home he and Florence purchased in Fortuna.

Charley worked for the Pacific Lumber Company for 40 years. After retirement he and Florence spent their winters in Arizona for many years. His family is especially appreciative of his wonderful neighbors on So. 15th Street and Newburg Rd., who watched out for him and made it possible for him to live independently in his home until his final illness. Words can not express our gratitude to those wonderful neighbors who watched over him.

Charley played baseball in the Humboldt County leagues in his youth, and was a long time fan of the New York, later the San Francisco Giants. He attended the Giants game last year in which Barry Bonds hit home run #73, a thrill he mentioned often, and which he pointed out to one and all was a new record, breaking the one Barry had set the day before. He was proud of having attended Giants games in all three bay area ballparks.

Charley is survived by his daughter, Jean Thrap Branstetter and his son Gary Thrap and wife Alice of Eureka; by his sister Myrtle Baxter of Fortuna; grandchildren Nancy Koval, Philip and Steven Thrap and his wife Susan, all of Eureka; great-grandchildren Jerry Koval, Justin, Tyler, Jacob, Travis, Logan Levi, and Lane Thrap, all of Eureka. He is also survived by his cousins Beulah Stillings of Fortuna and Noel Harris and wife Ina of Eureka, as well as other cousins, nieces and nephews.

Charley was preceded in death in 1998 by Florence, his wife of over 66 years, by his son-in-law Randal Branstetter, grandson Mark Branstetter, his parents, his brother and five sisters.

Friends are invited to attend services Monday March 18, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. at Goble's Chapel, Fortuna with Pastor Bob Brazie officiating. Private interment will be at Ocean View Cemetery, Eureka.

Arrangements are under the direction of Goble's Chapel, Fortuna, where friends may call Sunday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m.

The family has asked that memorial contributions made be made in Charley's name to a favorite charity.
