He was the husband of Delia (Rowan) Ritmiller and the son of Germanic immigrants. His Father, Georg Ritmiller, is thought to have come to the US from Heiligenstadt Prussia. His mother was from Twistringen, Kingdom of Hanover. Joseph was orphaned as a boy and lived with his sister Mary (Ritmiller) Gamble and her family on a dairy farm at Hillen Road & Hamilton Ave. As an adult he continued to work on the farm until he took jobs as fire fighter for the city, Baltimore Dry Dock Co., and Fort Holabird. He subsequently worked on his own as a carpenter and building contractor.
