She married John Haines who was mustered out to the Civil War just a few months prior to the birth of their youngest daughter Fanny. When news of her husband's starvation at Andersonville arrived, Rachel took up weaving to help raise her seven children. Their oldest daughter Emmaline would later marry Joseph Bechdel.
