Dr. Russell C. Wyman came to Maitland when the railroad went through in 1880. That he was one of the earliest residents is evidenced by the fact that his son, Fred C. Wyman, was the second boy born in the new town. Dr. Wyman was appointed surgeon and doctor for the C.B. & Q. Railroad and the small salary he received from this source was all that kept him from starvation while he built up a practice in the new town.
Dr. Wyman was born in Connecticut on September 5, 1853, and emigrated with his parents to Blantonville, Illinois, in 1859. The family came to Missouri in 1864, locating near Burr Oak Grove in Nodaway County. In 1865 they came on to Holt County and lived on a farm in the northern part of Whig Valley, later known as the Geo. Wagner place and Russell attended the Whig Valley school. In 1866 the family moved to near Maryville, Missouri, where Russell grew to manhood. He finished his higher education with high honors at Clarinda, Iowa, and Keokuk Medical College, graduating in May, 1876.
The same year he became associated with Dr. Morgan of Graham where he remained until moving to Maitland. Shortly after coming to Graham, Dr. Wyman married Bertha Duclinan of Graham, whose father was a tailor. To them were born nine children; Edward, who died in infancy; Charles Wentworth, Maude, who died in infancy; Fred C., born 1881, died 1952, married Daisy Brown; P. Lionel Wyman, married Lillian Cowan and lived at Mound City, Missouri; Grace, who married Percy L. Miller, farmer, and lived in Overland Park, Kansas; Demas C.; Helen, who married Sigmund H. Sieber, an architect, and lived in Kansas City, Mo.
Dr. Wyman passed away in 1901.
Obituary from the Holt County Sentinel-Aug. 23, 1901
Dr. W.C.? Wyman, one of the oldest and best known physicians from Holt County, died at his home in Maitland, Wednesday morning, August 14, 1901. Dr. Wyman, although, only somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 years of age, had been practicing medicine in Maitland and Graham for many years. He commenced preparation for his profession many years ago in the office of Dr. Morgan, who was then practicing in Graham, and whose son is at present a doctor at that place. Afterwards Mr. Wyman officed by himself at Graham and when the town of Maitland was started he moved there and has since been engaged in the practice of medicine and in the drug business, besides owning other property interests in the town and being identified with the growth of Maitland. He has a large acquaintance in both Holt and Nodaway counties, and was especially well known among the older settlers of Hughes Township. -Maryville Tribune.
