Anna Louise (Anderson) Ashford Kostenborder (1930-2013), 83, resident of Salem, Oregon, passed away of natural causes in Happy Valley, Oregon, on July 4, 2013.

Louise was born on February 1, 1930, in Palo Alto, California, the eldest of two daughters born to L. Harold "Pete" and Edna Mae Anderson. After graduating from Palo Alto High School in 1947, she attended Oregon State University, where she lived in Sackett Hall. While at Oregon State, she met her husband of 31 years, Jason Feller Ashford – who was an Isaac and Emily (Adams) Bates descendant. Louise and Jason were married on March 19, 1950, had five children. They divorced in 1981.

In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Louise spent many years as a preschool teacher at the First Presbyterian Church in Salem, was a dedicated Cub Scout den mother and a member of Eastern Star. During her vibrant life she pursued her love of art. She enjoyed taking painting classes, quilting and engaging in other creative arts. She hand-painted faces on pumpkins and won awards for them. "Grandma Weeze," as she was known by some of her grandchildren, hand-painted Christmas ornaments and sewed stockings for each one of them. Louise was especially witty and loved making a play on words and practical jokes.

She married William "Bill" Kostenborder on July 13, 1989. They enjoyed spending time together on their many trips to Alaska, at their small cabin on Croisan Mountain, and dancing. Everyone who spent time with Louise was touched by her kind and welcoming personality, and sweet disposition. Louise was much loved by everyone she met. She enjoyed nature and the outdoors, especially birds, and had a vast collection of bird houses, some of which she crafted. Louise loved her family; her five children with their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She found immense joy being visited by them at any time and always stood on the porch waving goodbye until they were out of sight.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents, sister Nona Ring, former husband Jason Ashford, and husband Bill Kostenborder, December 6, 2007.  She is survived by her five children Harold (Peggy), Bonnie (Ross), Glenn (Betty Jo), Bruce (Jeannine) and Scott (Meleah); fifteen grandchildren Teresa (Lori), T.J., Katie, Marc, Kelly (Derik), Amanda (Dustin), Andrew, Matt, Nick, Chris (Ashley), Dustin, Micah, Jake, Angela and Monica, and eight great-grandchildren Lucy, Isaac, Jonah, Lincoln, Rahya, Lilliana, Leste, and Cruz. A memorial service and reception were held on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Salem. Arrangements were by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
