Like his Father, Don was a Barber. He originally had his Barbershop at the corner of 9th & Kearney in Atchison, Kansas and later moved it to 9th & Parallel in Atchison.

According to Grandma Berneice's notes, Don was born on Sunday, September 17, 1905 at 3:05 P.M. in Denton, Kansas and he married Rosa on Thursday, March 29, 1928 in Hiawatha, Kansas.

Don had suffered with severe headaches for some time and on Saturday, June 4th, 1949, he took his own life. His sister Berneice (my grandmother) found him in his car in front of their parents home in Denton, Kansas around 11:00 P.M. that evening.

Services were held at the First Methodist Church in Atchison, Kansas at 2:30 on Tuesday, June 7th with the Reverend Ralph Taylor officiating.

Don was known as a good natured man who liked to joke around with his customers, he was known as "unusually popular". His funeral was one of the largest ever held at the Church. He was a Senior Deacon in the Masonic lodge, No. 158. A large number of Masons attended his funeral wearing their Masonic Aprons. All of the members of the Atchison Barber's Union, Local 916 attended. Every seat in the church auditorium was filled and the crowd overflowed.

To add to the tragedy, his oldest daughter, "Wray" who was 18 years old and a student nurse at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, was on her way (with 4 family friends) to the Medical Center on Sunday, June 5th to get clothing for her to wear to her Father's funeral when a blinding rainstorm caused them to be in a head-on collision on US Highway 71 about 3 miles south of Platte City, Missouri around 9:00 P.M. that evening. Unfortunately, 1 of the passenger's passed away from his injuries. Wray was admitted to St. John's Hospital in critical condition with a concussion of the brain.
